A volunteer is an individual who gives freely of their time, talents and services without expectation of any financial compensation. Volunteers are not City employees and no salary is provided for volunteer services. Volunteers make valuable contributions to the City and its mission to provide exceptional services.
Long-Term Volunteers - Volunteers that plan to contribute a significant amount of time volunteering for the City of El Paso, over the course of one year or more.
Short-Term Volunteers - Volunteers that contribute time with an end date in mind. This includes volunteers in summer internships and 6 to 12-month internships. These positions may include: unpaid interns, Workforce Center interns, court-ordered community service/alternative sentencing volunteers, Eagle Scouts, and service learners.
One-Day Volunteers - Volunteers that contribute time at special events, is in the continuous presence of other adults and has no isolated or unsupervised contact with any member of the public. Often, these volunteers participate with a group, such as: businesses, religious groups, clubs, and other organizations.

The city has many departments with varying volunteer opportunities.
The El Paso Fire Department is a full-service fire department. We respond to all calls involving fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, and other emergency events in the City of El Paso. Specialized teams respond to water, mountain, and technical rescues. The department provides mutual aid to Fort Bliss Military Base and the County of El Paso under the terms of the Mutual Aid Agreements.

As a volunteer with the El Paso Police Department, the unique skills you bring will provide assistance with everyday tasks and special projects. Participation in the Volunteer Program helps you become involved with the department’s staff, helping with ongoing activities and assists with the department’s efforts to prevent crime, provide services to the communities, and creates safer environments.
The Streets and Maintenance Department keeps the City rolling. Come join the most diverse department in the City with opportunities in street infrastructure maintenance, traffic engineering, fleet and building maintenance and park land management occupations that will open the door to your future.
Our City of El Paso Zoo Conservation Program is recruiting volunteers to work with our Education Team both virtually and at the Zoo. Education volunteers through the City Volunteer Program at the Zoo get to pick their own hours, attend special meetings where they get to learn more about what is going on at the Zoo and help with all kinds of conservation education projects that best fit with the volunteer’s interest in wildlife and helping to educate others.
The Airport is looking for enthusiastic interns interested in expanding air service development by either performing passenger surveys, promoting land lease opportunities, or furthering our efforts in sustainability. The International Bridges Department provides cross-border mobility and on-street parking services to residents, visitors, and businesses of the greater Paso Del Norte region. Through the management of three ports of entry, connecting El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and through the management of on-street smart parking meters we contribute to the economic development of the regional economy.

ESD is responsible for providing a wide range of services to the residents of El Paso, like garbage and curbside recycling collections, landfill operations, air quality monitoring, and vector control, among other services to help keep our community clean and beautiful.
